Skin pigmentation from sun damage, acne scars or ageing is a common problem I find a lot of customers come to us for advice on. If you suffer with an uneven skin tone, with dark spots or patches of pigmentation, it can make you feel incredibly self conscious. But there is no need to be! 80 percent of women are affected by pigmentation from a variety of causes at some point in their lifetime, so you are not alone.
If you were a sun worshipper in your 20's and 30's and weren't strict with the sun protection, then you may experience some level of pigmentation. It can take years for sun damage to form on the skin, so whilst you probably thought you weren't doing that much damage to your skin at the time, you certainly will be long term.
Stimulated by hormonal changes from the menopause, birth control pills, stress, the sun and even fragrance in products (just one of the reasons why its best to never use products with synthetic fragrance!).
This type of pigmentation will gradually fade. It is the skins natural response to damage from acne, burns, friction or harsh clinical treatments (such as chemical peels or dermabrasion). The skin will appear darker, red, brown or greyish in colour where the skin has been damaged, the pigmentation will darken if it is exposed to the sun for a prolonged period of time. So make sure you wear an SPF daily to prevent it from getting worse.
The great news is that there are several natural products on the market that can help even out the tone of your skin. It takes regular use of these skincare products to see results, so keep up your skincare routine and you will notice the pigmentation starting to fade within 1-3 months.
